Charter a yacht in Bora Bora and you’ll see a side to French Polynesia landlubbers will never experience. Here’s why you should visit.

The allure of Bora Bora, and Tahiti in general, is undoubtedly the crystal clear, calm ocean that surrounds these tiny island nations. Spectacularly beautiful Bora Bora is the best known of several idyllic islands that make up Tahiti, French Polynesia.

Bora Bora Yacht Club, accessible by the only channel entering the sheltered lagoon surrounding the island is a must-do for all bareboaters. It’s a great place to enjoy local cuisine, watch a sunset and plan your adventure.

While you’re on Bora Bora, make sure you book a local dive operator and dive among manta rays and tropical fish. There are various diving options suitable for the beginner or experienced diver and, with pristine visibility, it’s no wonder this region is on the bucket list for many holidaymakers. Shark dives and feeding experiences are also highly popular.

Raiatea Island is where you will most likely start and end your charter, in the picturesque harbour of Marina Apooiti. This island is the second largest in French Polynesia and is a fertile, agricultural hub, with views of lush fruit and spice plantations, waterfalls and a lagoon teeming with marine life.

You may also want to lay anchor at Motu Tau Tau, an islet with pristine white-sand beaches and palms. Explore the lagoon with views across to Tahaa and witness the colourful marine life and Distichopora coral below.

Your final must-see destination is Tahaa, and the Taravana Yacht Club. Just a short sail from Raiatea, Tahaa is locally known as ‘Vanilla Island’, in honour of the sweet aroma of vanilla that wafts from the surrounding vanilla plantations.

After lunch at the Taravana Yacht Club, visit the nearby turtle reserve sanctuary, where you can see these creatures in their natural habitat. You’ll be guaranteed some beautiful images!

Tahiti is a destination for romantics and adventure seekers alike. It’s a favourite amongst honeymooners and couples and is famous for its vibrant tropical sunsets and pristine eco-system.

Happy sailing!
